PROPOSED FIELD TRIP BY TOM SCHOENING

August 28, 2026  •  Leave a Comment

Spend the day taking photographs of historic reenactors at Fort Atkinson, north of Omaha. Reenactors of the French and Indian war, revolutionary war, civil war, both world wars and modern conflicts will be on the parade grounds at the weekend event.

I'm looking for a Sunday, September 6th, field trip to the event. These photos would play well with the 250th US theme for our upcoming photo exhibit and photography program at Lewis and Clark.

Fort Atkinson (Nebraska) Location: Present-day Fort Calhoun, Nebraska (on the west bank of the Missouri River). Active Years: 1819 (as Camp Missouri) to 1827.

Military & Pioneer Significance: It was the first U.S. Army post west of the Missouri River in the Louisiana Purchase. At its peak, it housed roughly 1,200 soldiers (nearly a quarter of the entire U.S. Army), making it a massive frontier hub that protected the fur trade, hosted expeditions, and established early farming, a school, and a library. Learn more at the Fort Atkinson State Historical Park site.
